It was one of the biggest trades in recent memory, and Kasparas Jakucionis is proving that it could pay off for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Since departing the Illinois basketball program, Kasparas Jakucionis has had an interesting path in the NBA.

Selected No. 20 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, the former Illini point guard was supposed to be a foundational piece for the Miami Heat. That proved to be the case for at least a year, as Jakucionis gave the Heat 6.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.

Miami did value Jakucionis greatly, and that is why he was a make-or-break piece in one of the biggest trades the NBA has seen in the last decade or so.

Giannis Antetokounmpo was sent to Miami for a ton of draft capital and players, with Jakucionis being the player that pushed the trade over the edge to completion. The Milwaukee Bucks are now getting this elite point guard, and he is showing his new franchise that this trade makes them set at the point guard position.

Jakucionis is currently playing for Lithuania in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Europe. In a qualifying game on Thursday, Jakucionis had a big game, finishing with the highest +/- on the team at +35 in the win over Great Britain.

When the final buzzer went off, Jakucionis had 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and one steal. He was 4-of-8 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Since his days with Illinois, Jakucionis has always been a very efficient player. The fact that he only had two turnovers in just under 30 minutes of action is not surprising. He also averaged fewer than a turnover a game with the Heat.

The point guard doors are wide open with the Milwaukee Bucks, and Kasparas Jakucionis is stepping through

When any Illinois player gets traded, I worry that it could just be a spiral of bad things that happen to them as far as where they land. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Jakucionis, though.

Jakucionis is going to a Bucks franchise that is in desperate need of a point guard. I think he comes in and is starting over someone like Kevin Porter Jr., who, to me, isn’t a real point guard. I will be interested in seeing who does actually start for the Bucks this season, and who could still be on the move via trade.

Regardless, Jakucionis is out here playing well for his national team in the summer. He is honing his talents in preparation for the upcoming season. Milwaukee might be disappointed that Giannis is gone, but they are getting some great talent in return.
