Jayshon Trimble's injury brings questions to Illinois' already thin wide receiver room

Illinois was able to get through fall camp fairly unscathed when it came to starters until Tuesday, when head coach Bret Bielema spoke to the media with a new injury update.

The pass-catchers have taken a hit in fall camp for the Illini with injuries to tight end BJ Thurman and wide receiver Alex Perry, who are both expected to be out for the season. Now, the wide receiver room took another hit, this time to a likely starter.

Bielema shared that FAU transfer Jayshon Platt sustained an injury, but did not specify exactly what it was. All Bielema said of the injury is that it is one that has an unknown timeline for return, but Week 1 seems unlikely at this point.

"He's a guy that we're obviously getting to know for the first time, but this injury, I think, has been one that when it first happened [we] didn't know the exact timeline on it," Bielema said. "[We] have gotten good news since then. Whether he is back in Week 1 or Week 3 or Week 4, I don't really know at this point."

Other than ECU quarterback transfer Katin Houser, Platt has received the most hype of any transfer Illinois has in the offseason, especially in fall camp. While it seemed like Illinois would have a battle for the slot/WR3 spot with vets Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement coming back, Platt quickly took over the role.

Now with the injury to Platt, that position is wide open, but the depth is thin. Bielema will need young players to step up, especially with it being unknown how long the FAU transfer will be out. The most logical answer for a replacement until Platt returns is Brayden Trimble, who has also received a lot of great buzz in fall camp.

It has been a common topic of conversation that Trimble has taken huge steps forward since his freshman season in 2025. After enrolling as a true freshman before the start of the 2025 season, Trimble has now gone through two fall camps and has built a good connection with Houser.

The wide receiver group isn't the only one to take a hit with Platt's injury, as he was also expected to take over return duties for the Illini. Platt was mainly going to return punts and be in the mix for kickoffs, and until he returns, those duties will most likely fall to Illinois State transfer Eddie Kasper.

Platt's availability is doubtful for Week 1, but here's to hoping he starts to trend in the right direction, especially with Big Ten play starting in Columbus vs. Ohio State in Week 4.
