Illinois football has found new life in 2026 after upsetting the Oregon Ducks 21-10 in Champaign on October 24.

The Illini, who are 4-3 through seven games, pulled off their biggest win of the season against Dan Lanning and Oregon. They used their bye week preparation to the fullest, bringing Bielema's record after a bye to 8-2.

It was a special win for Illinois that revitalized a fan base, but it didn't stop there, as the program also found new life in the recruitment of Jahmiere Daniels-Portis.

Daniels-Portis, a Springfield, Ohio product, is a three-star linebacker in the class of 2027, ranking No. 82 at his position and No. 41 overall in Ohio. He is coming off an impressive junior year for Springfield High School, recording 88 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles, five sacks, and two interceptions.

The 6-foot-1 Daniels-Portis originally committed to the Colorado Buffaloes on June 24 after making an official visit on June 12, but decommitted on Tuesday for reasons that have not been made public. Teams expected to continue pursuing Daniels-Portis include Illinois, Indiana, Cincinnati, and NC State.

Jahmiere Daniels-Portis would bring a disruptive force to Illinois' defense

Illinois' defense has struggled to put pressure on the quarterback, ranking last in the Big Ten in sacks with seven. Their front seven has seen its share of success throughout 2026, but overall, they haven't matched up well against stronger offensive fronts.

If Daniels-Portis commits to Illinois, he can certainly help change that, especially with his high athleticism and intense motor. The senior possesses great speed and versatility at the linebacker position, using his unique skill set to terrorize the opposition in the backfield and secondary.

The Illini already have a solid linebacker corps led by fifth-year players James Kreutz and Ismael Kante, but they will need to find a replacement for when they depart. If Daniels-Portis comes to Champaign, he will be able to build a legacy with the Illini and lead a linebacking corps in need of a lift.

Bielema will probably not stick with the 3-3-5 in 2027, which is a perfect scheme for Daniels-Portis to play in. But regardless of that, this player has all the tools to be a great linebacker for the Illini.
