Just 10 days ago, the Illinois Fighting Illini picked up a big-time commitment in the form of four-star athlete Jacob Eberhart, the No. 20 overall prospect in the class of 2026.

Eberhart, who has played on both sides of the ball throughout his high school career, committed to the Fighting Illini over programs like the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Oklahoma Sooners, and more. The reasoning behind his decision will make Illinois fans even more excited for his future with the team.

His father, Jason Eberhart, played defensive lineman for the Fighting Illini in the late 90s. The commitment to his father's alma mater is a nod to his legacy. His father passed away in 2023, just four years after Jacob lost his brother in 2019.

"My mom was still working, my brother was gone, I was the only man of the house," Eberhart said in a recent interview. "Football was my way of to cope, it's always been my way of coping."

When you've dealt with tragedy like losing a parent or a sibling, it can put football into perspective. It can also allow a player to lean into the game they love more than ever, while keeping a balanced head about what's truly important in life.

"I don't wanna let my team down," Eberhart said. "I'm looking to come through cause I know my team needs me, and my dad would want me to come through."

Eberhart's high school coach, Jeremy Maclin, talked about how much the young athlete cares about his team, his teammates, and his family. Eberhart hasn't been scared to show his emotions, whether on the field or off of it, and that's exactly how Illinois and head coach Bret Bielema landed his commitment.

"They just connect like me," Eberhart said. "That's what I'm looking for. The money can come later. I'm looking for someone who can pour into me and make me a better human to go out and face real-world problems."
