It wasn’t the prettiest first half in the world, but the Illinois football team ended the first 30 minutes in incredible fashion.
The Illini were reeling a bit as UAB came down the field and scored a touchdown to bring the game to 14-13 with under 30 seconds to go in the first half. Illinois drove down to about our 40-yard line, and that is when magic happened.
Katin Houser dropped back for a last-second Hail Mary that no one expected to be caught. UAB didn’t blitz anyone, so Houser was literally walking in the backfield. He flung the ball into the end zone, and Ty Robinson came down with the ball. It was a touchdown to end the first half.

This was needed in the worst way. Illinois’ offense had stalled on the previous few drives, leaving the total for the Orange and Blue at 14 points for most of the contest.
Illinois had scored on the first two possessions of the game, and then we couldn’t get anything going. This allowed the Blazers to come back and get the game within one point.
The Illini defense also started to crumble. The defensive side of the ball was looking good, but toward the end of the first half, they were allowing Ryder Burton to complete passes. The pressure was still there, but UAB’s wide receivers were creating space between them and our defensive backs.
The miracle at the end of the first half will hopefully light a fire under Illinois’ offense
There are two things that the Hail Mary completion did for Illinois. It obviously got the score to a bigger margin. Only having a one-point lead at halftime was bad. It is now an eight-point lead, and the Illini are more in control.
Secondly, I would hope this big play for a touchdown would spark Illinois’ offense. We weren’t doing anything on the offensive side of the ball, and it was killing our defense because they had to be on the field more.
This huge play will put some life back in the Illinois offense. Let’s come out in the second half and put the Blazers away. Don’t let UAB hang around.
