Illinois football swoops in to land offensive weapon for the class of 2027

Recruiting is about to heat up, and the Illinois football team has already landed a player in the crucial month of June.

The Illinois football team is still trying to navigate through the recruiting landscape to land some talented pieces for the future.

Bret Bielema has done a great job every season when it comes to Illini recruiting, but the class of 2027 seems like more of a slog than usual. That has a chance to turn around, though, as numerous recruits are visiting Champaign starting this weekend.

Illinois has already started to see results from the big recruiting month of June. On Saturday, Cade Newman took to social media to announce that he has committed to Illinois.

Newman is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound tight end from Ankeny Centennial High School in Iowa. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 1309 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 67 tight end in the country and the No. 14 player in the state of Iowa.

There was some decent recruiting attention for Newman. He had already visited Iowa State last weekend, and he was on his visit to Illinois this weekend. Whatever pitch Bielema gave to Newman worked because we just pulled him out of his home state with the Cyclones bearing down on his recruitment.

The addition of Newman is Illinois’ first offensive weapon for the class of 2027. We now have five commitments, and the only other two offensive players were both linemen. The Illini now have another option on the outside to help protect and be a safety blanket for our future quarterback.

The Illinois football tight end situation is going to be interesting to watch over the next few years

In the Bielema era and even before then, Illinois tight ends have not jumped off the page. I think the best tight end we have had since the turn of the century is Jeff Cumberland.

There is no clear top dog in the tight end room heading into 2026, either. My guess is that former running back Kaden Feagin will potentially get the start, since he was so willing to flip positions. Look for Christian Abney, among others, to make an impact, too.

I think it is pretty evident that, if Newman has talent, he has a strong chance to see the field early on in his career. Illinois doesn’t have anyone at the position that blows you away, so if Newman can block well or catch the ball, he has a good chance to see snaps from day one.

Building out depth at tight end is a good idea for the Illini. We use the position in multiple ways, and Bielema just got a good one in Newman. Hopefully, this is just the first domino in what is a great month of June for the Orange and Blue.
