Former Illinois football recruiting target Logan Flaherty announced his decommitment from the University of Central Florida.
The 6-foot-2 signal caller is a top 750 prospect according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Flaherty has been on the Illini radar for quite some time. Illinois offered the Port Charlotte quarterback in May 2025, and he has been on campus for an unofficial visit.
I want to thank Coach Milton and the rest of the UCF Football staff, but after a lot of thought and prayer I will be officially opening up my recruitment. This won’t be an easy recruitment for Illinois to win.
They are competing against power conference foes like South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, and Florida State.
According to 247Sports’ Zach Bolstein, Greg Schiano’s Scarlet Knights are currently contacting him the most.
Illinois football has arguably as good a contemporary football sell as any of those programs.
With Art Sitkowski’s demonstrated ability to build relationships with top quarterbacks, Flaherty is emerging as a high-end pivot from recent Michigan commitment Kamden Lopati.
Quarterback recruitments move at breakneck speeds. They turn fast and crash hard. It’s a high-stakes game of musical chairs, and Illinois may find itself standing when the music stops and the 2027 top quarterback prospects are all off the board.
The other top option left for Illinois football
Massachusetts star Peter Bourque is also uncommitted and has an Illinois offer. He is ranked even higher than Lopati and would be a mammoth pivot for an Illinois squad looking to finally sign and develop a prep quarterback who becomes a decorated multi-year starter. Bourque decommitted from Michigan in February. With Lopati in the fold in Ann Arbor, perhaps it’s time to send Sitkowski to catch some high school lacrosse.
Can Illinois hold off James Franklin and the Hokies in that recruitment if they choose to prioritize Bourque?
If neither Flaherty nor Bourque, then transfer portal or Carson Boyd?
A wise person once said that if you think you have two starting quarterbacks, you have zero. So if Boyd is not ready to take the reins in 2027, it’s back to the transfer portal, where Illinois has enjoyed success with three straight solid-to-excellent starting quarterbacks before Katin Houser. So until the Illini finally close on a top prep signal caller, there will be a black mark on Bret Bielema’s staff’s recruiting efforts.
