Illinois football makes top 3 for elite 2027 wide receiver recruit

Bret Bielema needs to add more talent to the class of 2027, and this would be a big win on the recruiting front.

The Illinois football team is trying to build the class of 2027 into one of the best in the nation, and adding this big-time recruit would help.

As of right now, the Illini have the No. 64 class in the country for 2027. This isn’t great, but there are only four players pledged, so there is plenty of room to grow.

Illinois doesn’t have a playmaker committed, though. Bret Bielema has landed a couple of guys in the trenches on offense, and then a linebacker and a cornerback on defense.

On Monday, the Illini moved one step closer to adding a burner. Don Spillers III took to social media to announce that he has cut his top list down to just three teams. The three programs to make his top list include Louisville, Michigan State, and Illinois.

All three programs would love a caliber player like Spillers. He is a 6-foot-2, 195-pound athlete from Martin Luther King High School in Michigan. Spillers is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 848 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 65 athlete in the country and the No. 14 player coming out of Michigan.

The official visit schedule starts this weekend with Michigan State. Spillers will then make the trip to Illinois on the weekend of June 5. He then finishes with Louisville on the weekend of June 12.

There should be a lot of excitement for a player like Spillers. I like to see which programs have offered a player and then compare that to their national ranking. Spillers is just inside the top 1000 nationally, but he has offers from teams like Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, etc. To me, that means he is vastly underrated on the recruiting sites.

Don Spillers III size and speed would be a great addition to an Illinois football offense that needs playmakers

The first thing that jumps off the page about Spillers is his size. Any wide receiver who stands at 6-foot-2 is someone who intrigues me. That is a nice big body to target on offense.

I love what he brings to the table with athletic ability, too. Spillers can get out in space and find the gap in the defense. When he catches the ball, he seems to be slippery and a hard player to tackle.

Illinois could always use more talent at the wide receiver position. When 2027 rolls around, Hudson Clement, Ty Robinson, Alex Perry, Jayshon Platt, and Eddie Kasper will all be gone. The following year, Collin Dixon will depart. That leaves a lot of snaps to be had by young players on the roster.

Spillers would have a chance to come in and contribute early on. If he has the ability to learn the offense quickly, the Illinois coaching staff will play him. Let’s land Spillers and continue building out what should be a good recruiting class for 2027.
