Illinois football lost Katin Houser to injury but his mentorship has proved invaluable

Adversity shows character, and Katin Houser has proved to be the leader Illinois football needs on and off the field.

The Illinois football program is halfway through the 2026 season, and we are now transitioning to a new quarterback.

Katin Houser went down with what looks to be a wrist injury late in the third quarter, and the Illini called upon Michael Clayton II to take the reins.

Clayton ended the game with two touchdowns and a victory. For Houser, he departed the game with an injury that looks to be season-ending.

The time Houser is going to spend with the Illinois football program is short, and his time as a starter is even shorter. While he physically can’t help the Illini on the field, Bret Bielema noted in his postgame press conference that Houser has made a big impact on the program off the field.

“Katin (Houser), I just can’t say enough about what he has done. He also, in my opinion, has monitored and built up Michael (Clayton II).”

Houser continued to take Clayton under his wing throughout the process.

“I know when Katin first got here, his place wasn’t ready, or maybe it was Michael’s place wasn’t ready, and they lived together for about a month. I will never forget that. I saw those guys walking together, and I knew they showed up together.”

Houser isn’t just some transfer portal quarterback who didn’t get time at other places. He has a ton of experience at both the power four and group of five levels. Houser knows the quarterback position and how to be a starter in the college game.

“At that point, I know I said to Michael, 'Hey man, this guy (Katin Houser) has been through a lot. He has played a lot of football. The more you can absorb from him.' And I think he has done that. To see that manifest today was absolutely awesome.”

You can tell a person’s true character when the chips are down. It isn’t about the good moments and how they react. It is about the bad moments and their response in those moments.

Houser showed his true character on Saturday. He went down with what looks to be a season-ending injury, and he is still rallying around his team. Houser even gave some love to his replacement after the game.

“Katin gave him a huge hug in the locker room. To know what that meant as a young quarterback, to have that moment is cool.”

Katin Houser was on track to have his best season in college with the Illinois football program

It is a sad ending for Houser at Illinois. The program might not have met expectations when he was here, as the defense has let us down, but that is not Houser’s fault.

Houser was having his best season of his career through six games. It wasn’t even a full six games, either.

For the season, Houser threw for 1,440 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions. That is only six games, so if you double those numbers, that is 2,880 yards, 24 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

That would have been the first time Houser hit the 20-touchdown mark. He also carries a completion rate of 66.3%, which is the best of his career.

When one door closes, another door opens. It is just sad that the Houser door had to close like this. It is now Clayton’s turn at quarterback, and it seems like he is ready not just to open the door, but to bust through it headfirst.
