The Illinois football program puts player health above anything, and we saw that on Monday.
Sometimes things are bigger than football. After the first fall practice on Monday, Bret Bielema took to the podium to talk about the team and what is on his mind.
This is when Bielema broke the bad news about Illinois wide receiver Davon Grant.
“Unfortunately, once he got here, he is a guy that has some things medically that we would never be able to clear the hurdle.”
Bielema continued on his status with Illinois.
“He’s kind of in a holding pattern right now. He won’t be able to play for us at Illinois. There are a couple of things in front of him. I think he is going to stay here and go to school. Super disappointed for him. There was a lot of conversation with him and his folks and medical people, but ultimately, bottom line, safety for our players is No. 1 priority.”
This news came out of left field for the Illinois football program. Grant was a good get for the Illini and someone who could have made an impact in the next couple of seasons.
Grant was a 6-foot-4, 200-pound wide receiver coming out of DeKalb High School in Illinois. He was rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 665 player in the class of 2026.
Obviously, health is the top priority, and the fact that Bielema gets it shows you that he gets life. He isn’t risking anything, and I appreciate that out of my head coach.
On a football level, it hurts losing a 6-foot-4 pass catcher. Those types of players are so valuable, and now Illinois is out one massive target.
The Illinois football depth chart can sustain a hit at wide receiver
While it is disappointing to lose Grant, the Illinois wide receiver corps is still pretty solid. In my early projected depth chart, I had him on the third string.
Illinois did a lot of work in the transfer portal this offseason to help bolster the wide receiver group. Landing players like Jayshon Platt, Alex Perry, and Ty Robinson will be huge for the program.
Don’t sleep on the talent we have returning, either. Hudson Clement and Collin Dixon are both poised to have big years. I think you could see an emergence from Brayden Trimble, too.
It does pain me to see Grant off the roster. I wish the kid nothing but the best, and hopefully, he can figure out the health issue. From a football perspective, Illinois at least has the depth to sustain this type of hit.
