The strong performance by kicker David Olano during the Illinois football 2025 campaign has him on track to break some long-standing kicking records.
Without a doubt, one of the biggest weapons in this Illini offense has been the leg of Olano. From his late heroics against USC to his monster five-kick performance against Purdue, he is on the precipice of a record-breaking season.
With five games left in the season, and a probable bowl game on the horizon, Olano is going to have a real chance at breaking the record for the most consecutive field goals made in a season.
Mike Bass’s record of 13 in 1982 is only two more than Olano's current streak of 11. His consistency this season makes this record vulnerable as early as the Illini’s next game.
Multiple Illinois football records are in jeopardy due to David Olano's greatness
Moreover, the field goals made in a season record of 24, a three-way tie for the record, is in the theoretical range for Olano. Just needing to average three field goals per game, this record is dependent on how the offense performs as a whole.
Also dependent on the offense is the extra points made in a season record of 44 set by Neil Rackers in 1999. Olano would need to kick 17 more extra points to break the record, meaning the Illini would have to average around three to four touchdowns per game.
Given the lightness of the backend of their schedule and the fiery Illini offense, this record is in reach.
Regardless of whether or not Olano is able to break these records, his 2025 campaign will go down fondly in Illini fans’ memories.
