It has been a long time since the Illinois football program has been one of the true contenders when it comes to recruiting.
Let’s hammer out the details. If you are 15 years old, you were just being born the last time the Illini had a top-tier recruiting class. There are college kids who don’t remember the days when Illinois landed some of the best players in the country and had one of the best classes coming into the program.
You have to go back to 2009 to find the last time the Illini had a class ranked inside the top 30 nationally. So, 16 years. That is pretty incredible. Well, right now, Bret Bielema is on pace to reset that clock.
On Sunday afternoon, Javari Barnett took to social media to announce that he has committed to Illinois. He took an official visit to Champaign this past weekend, and the recruiting pitch was enough to get him to commit.

Barnett is a 5-foot-11.5, 205-pound running back from Tampa Bay Tech in Florida. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 446 player in the class of 2026. Barnett is also the No. 32 running back in the country and the No. 66 player coming out of Florida.
This is a big commitment, but Illinois still has some work to do to keep the deal closed. Barnett has a myriad of scholarship offers, including from Auburn, Alabama, Miami (FL), and Penn State, to name a few. It looks like the talented running back still has an official visit in June to see what the Crimson Tide has to offer. That is always a terrifying thought.
Bret Bielema has Illinois football with a legitimate chance to finish with a top 20 recruiting class for 2026
A big issue for the Illini over the past decade and a half is the fact that we can’t put both quantity and quality together. Either we have a ton of okay players and get lucky with a few, or the program has a couple of really good players but only has about half of the players we need committed.
What Bielema is doing with the class of 2026 is impressive. Illinois already has 11 commitments, and we are still in line for many more. I think it is clear that the quantity is going to be there with this recruiting class.
The quality is off the charts, too. Victor Singleton is the top recruit and is a top 60 player for 2026. All of the Illini commits are also top 800 recruits, so that gives us a nice talent pool.
As a team, Illinois ranks No. 11 in the country in recruiting for 2026. If we keep adding the quality talent, then I think Bielema can lock us into a top 20 recruiting class. That is something extremely rare for this program.
