Illinois football's defense has been a major problem so far this season, giving up 54 total points through its first two games.
The Illini, who lost 31-27 to Duke on Saturday, struggled to make a stop against Nate Sheppard and the Blue Devils, giving up 376 total yards to their non-conference opponents.
This was not a good weekend for the Illinois faithful, as their dreams of making a bowl game are now walking a fine line. But in preparation for the future, Bret Bielema has successfully extended an offer to Tennessee EDGE Fred Ntumba from the class of 2028.

Ntumba, a product of Antioch, Tennessee, is an emerging EDGE rusher who has started the 2026 season off strong. According to MaxPreps, Ntumba has recorded 32 total tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, eight sacks, and seven hurries through four games.
The 6-foot-3 junior has become one of the top pass-rushers in Tennessee, ranking No. 2 in the state in sacks behind Powell's Joshua Kay. Ntumba has already received a large number of offers from FBS programs, including Mississippi State, Arkansas, and Wake Forrest.

The Bobby Hauck experiment has been a disappointing one. The Illini have two sacks this season, which ranks No. 106 in the country, and they are at the bottom of the country in tackling. They have struggled to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks, and the open-field tackling has been anything but impressive.
Illinois will need to continue to build depth on the edge, and Ntumba would be the perfect addition to the roster. His elite frame and high-level instincts have made him a major factor throughout high school, leading to 150 tackles and 17 sacks in his career.
From 2026-2028, Illinois has obtained commitments from six pass rushers from across the country. But with Ntumba's elite athletic abilities and impeccable resume, it's safe to say he would be a top contributor to the Orange and Blue.
Ntumba's name is going to skyrocket before graduation, and Illinois fans are going to want to keep a close eye on him.
