The Illinois football program just made this weekend even better with another addition to their 2027 recruiting class.
Bret Bielema and the Illini have already secured commitments from class of 2027 linemen Mason Halliman and Soren Fifer, and just added another quality recruit in Lombard, Illinois, product Gavin Ericson-Staton.
Ericson-Staton, a three-star offensive tackle from Montini Catholic High School, was first sent an offer from Illinois back on May 13 of this year. This offer then led to his official visit on the weekend of June 5, where the program sold the young man on what this program can do for him.

This is a big moment for Ericson-Staton in his football journey, as he will now flip his commitment to Illinois from Iowa State. According to Jeremy Werner of the Illini Inquirer, this is a very special moment for the in-state recruit, with the 2027 commit stating;
"Being from inside the state and always going there [Illinois] for wrestling tournaments, it was always a school. that I wanted to be recruited by throughout this process."
Ericson-Staton is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 1028 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 64 interior offensive lineman in the country and the No. 39 player in the state of Illinois.
Illinois football is keeping the in-state pipeline flowing with Ericson-Staton's big-time flip
Bielema and Co. are continuing to build on their stellar play on the offensive line after losing both J.C. Davis and Melvin Priestly to the NFL Draft. They already have a solid crop of talent committed to the team in their next few recruiting classes, but they need to continue to build on that depth for the foreseeable future.
When it comes to Ericson-Staton, Illinois is bringing in a large bruiser who has the ability to play the guard and tackle position. His 6-foot-5, 270 pound frame can make him a problem to move for opposing defenders out the gate, and will be something that the program can help him add to down the line.
As of writing this, it wouldn't be crazy to see Ericson-Staton as a main interior piece down the road, with the aforementioned Halliman and Fifer on the ends. But with the college football landscape always shifting, especially during this NIL era, there is always the chance that he may bounce to the outside.
