Illinois Football has their quarterback for 2026 but the questions don't stop there

Luke Altmyer held down the quarterback position for the past three years at Illinois and for a time, it felt like they had finally figured out the position that had been holding back them for so many years.

In three seasons with the Illinois football program, Luke Altmyer threw for 7,607 yards and 57 touchdowns, ranking him among the greatest quarterbacks to ever don the Orange and Blue.

Altmyer helped deliver back-to-back nine-win seasons for the Illini and beat an SEC team in a bowl game two years in a row. That's not just a bar you can casually replace. But, in this new era especially, college football waits for no one, and Bret Bielema went straight to work.

The answer, at least for 2026, is Katin Houser. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound redshirt senior from Anaheim, California, has one year of eligibility left. He does have some Big Ten experience, playing in eleven games for the Michigan State Spartans in 2023.

He spent the past two years at East Carolina, really coming into his own in 2025. He threw for just over 3,000 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.

Similar to Altmyer, Houser looks very comfortable moving around in the pocket. Unlike Altmyer, he doesn't move or improvise as well once the initial play call starts to break down.

Houser can rumble and bumble down in the red zone a little bit if needed; after all, he did score nine times on the ground last season. Maybe Bielema will test out the tush push this year with Houser's big body.

It still has not been 100% confirmed by Bielema that Houser will be the one to get the nod against UAB under the lights in week one. However, it does seem as if that is just a technicality at this point

Quarterbacks coach Art Sitkowski said he fell in love with Houser right away because of his intensity and authenticity, according to quotes recorded by the News-Gazette's Scott Richey. Bielema said they went after him hard because of his quick release and the options that open up for the offense.

We saw it some with Altmyer, and hope to see it as well with Houser, the experience and the importance of being in a Big Ten or SEC program before coming to Illinois.

It allows them to come in with a perspective and confidence that wouldn't be the same for a mid-major quarterback coming in, who would be experiencing a lot of new things for the first time and certainly needs some time to get their feet under them. Hopefully, Houser can hit the ground running.

Personally, Houser feels like a sensible get, not a huge, flashy splash, but a guy who has earned his stripes over the years. A proven FBS difference-maker who has already been a Big Ten starter.

He's got a fantastic arm, great mobility in the pocket, and the kind of competitiveness and leadership that sets the tone for the entire program.

The concern isn't so much his talent but the talent around Houser. Illinois lost four of five offensive linemen and overhauled its defensive scheme completely. It is going to take some time for the organization to settle in as a whole, and Houser is going to be expected to be a steady hand through all of it.

What comes next for Illinois football?

Seemingly, with the addition of 2027 four-star Kamden Lopati, Illinois had their quarterback of the future. The Salt Lake City native committed to Illinois in July 2025 and remained committed until the spring, but his recruitment skyrocketed after a very impressive junior season.

In April of this year, Lopati decommitted from Illinois and committed to Michigan the very next day. Lopati would have been the highest-ranked prep prospect to ever sign with Bielema,

So, who's left behind Houser? Carson Boyd, a three-star dual-threat redshirt freshman from St. Louis, who offensive coordinator Barry Lunney seems to really enjoy coaching.

The quarterback room also includes another redshirt freshman, Jershaun Newton, and an incoming freshman, Michael Clayton II. One of these guys could certainly be the future, but at this point, it is quite unclear what the situation will be beyond this season.

The 2026 season is Houser's. He has definitely earned the trust and has proven he can perform at a very high level. The staff believes in him, he had a great spring, and there doesn't seem to be a realistic challenger on the roster currently.

Illinois fans should go in clear-eyed, this is a program navigating a geniune transition year. Houser, while experienced and talented, is a bridge to whatever comes next for this program.

What comes after him, your guess is as good as mine, and I think people around the organization would admit it remains an open and slightly uncomfortable question.
