The vibes are in a bad place right now with the Illinois football program, as expectations were high entering 2026.
Illinois went out and got a solid replacement for Luke Altmyer. Katin Houser hasn’t disappointed. He has helped elevate Collin Dixon, and the rest of the Illini wide receivers are clicking right now.
What has been disappointing is the Illinois defense. Swiss cheese would be disappointed in how many holes this defense has right now. It isn’t playing at a Big Ten level, and it shows on the field.
The sad thing is, I don’t think there is any fix to the Illinois defense this season. It is something that the transfer portal and maybe even a coaching change need to fix.
With that being said, Illinois is only four games into a 12-game season. There are still eight contests left, and let me tell you, the schedule looks way tougher than what was first expected.

Next up for Illinois is a game in Champaign against Purdue. We needed one of the worst teams in the Big Ten. Also, this is kind of scary considering the Boilermakers have put up 36 and 38 points against power four opponents this season.
I think Illinois can take out Purdue despite giving up 20+ points to the Boilermakers.
Michigan State is the game that follows. The Spartans have a solid defense, but Illinois’ offense will be able to score. I like that Michigan State’s offense isn’t great. They have put up a total of 23 points in the last two weeks. Illinois takes this game, too.
Illinois is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten heading into the game against Oregon in Champaign.
The Ducks have rebounded nicely since their rough start. I expect Dante Moore to be out for a little while with a concussion. Dylan Raiola stepped in and was great against USC this past weekend. This is still a loss for the Illini.
Illinois then has Maryland and Nebraska. I think we need to pounce on these two teams before a tough stretch of three games to end the season.
The final three games feature road contests against UCLA and Northwestern, and then a home game against No. 17 Iowa. The Bruins and Wildcats are much better than people thought, and that is bad news for Illinois. UCLA has scored 106 points in the last two weeks, and Northwestern trounced Colorado and almost beat No. 5 Indiana on the road.
When the dust settles, I think Illinois is looking at the best-case scenario of 6-6 with a bowl game. The defense is too much of a liability for the offense to overcome. It could be a tough task to get to 6-6, too.

I know this might come as a shock, but in my eyes, there is a chance that Illinois bottoms out this season.
Illinois’ defense is not good. We can’t stop anyone but FCS-level programs. This next game could determine if the 2026 season is completely lost.
Purdue isn’t good, but they can score points. The Boilermakers scored 36 points against Wake Forest and 38 points against UCLA. That offense can move the football. Ryan Browne always plays well against us. In two games, he has thrown for a combined 599 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions against the Illini. This is a game to watch, and honestly, I could see Illinois dropping with our terrible defense.
Illinois goes into a full slide. Winning on the road in the Big Ten is tough. Michigan State’s defense is solid and holds Illinois to sub-20 points. The Illini defense gives up a few scores, and this leads to a narrow win for the Spartans.
Oregon puts up a 50-spot in the next game in a loss for the Illini.
Illinois finally gets a win against a team in Maryland that could be the worst program in the country. That is a nice relief leading into a brutal end to 2026.
Nebraska hasn’t played anyone this season, but they also haven’t scored fewer than 31 points. I see them potentially scoring 40+ against Illinois. That is another loss.
At UCLA, at home against No. 17 Iowa, and at Northwestern are the finishing stretch for the Illini. All three are playing much better than Illinois right now. All three have offenses that can move the ball against a bad Illini defense. Therefore, all three could easily be losses.
This worst-case scenario would have been devastating to start the 2026 campaign. Now, it isn’t that far from becoming a reality. Things need to change if Illinois doesn’t want to hit rock bottom.
