It was already a devastating Saturday for the Illinois football program, as losing to Purdue is one of the most embarrassing things that can happen to a program.
While the Illini were floundering against a team in the Boilermakers that hadn’t won a Big Ten game in a couple of years, running back Ca’Lil Valentine was dealing with some heartbreaking news off the field.
With 3:59 left in the first quarter, Valentine went down with an injury. He had to be helped off the field by a couple of people and never returned to the game. This was obviously a bad injury, but in the postgame press conference, Bret Bielema dealt us the worst possible injury news.
“I don’t know what Ca’Lil’s story is other than it is pretty significant. It is a season-ending type of injury. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I know it is very significant.”
You could tell the heartbreak that Bielema has for Valentine. He expressed that in the press conference, too.
“I am devastated for him. The kid puts a lot into it. He wears it on his sleeve. He’s a really good competitor.”
This was a big blow to Illinois against Purdue. Valentine had two carries for one yard before coming out of the game.
In the long run, the Illini will also struggle at the running back position. Valentine was our starter for most of the season, so losing him is big. He led the program with 50 carries on the season, and he also had 225 yards and 4.5 yards per carry.
Official word on Valentine’s status this season will probably come on Sunday or Monday, but the fact that Bielema is already saying it is season-ending means that everyone already knows what is going on, they just need confirmation.
Illinois football has a veteran presence in Aidan Laughery we can lean on moving forward
It is extremely sad news that Valentine is going to be out for the season. I wish him a speedy recovery, and I can’t wait to see him back on the field in 2027.
With that being said, Illinois thankfully has an experienced running back in Aidan Laughery who can take charge in the backfield.
Laughery is in his fifth year with the Illini, and he has been a major impact ball carrier this season. He has five fewer carries than Valentine this season, but Laughery has amassed 321 yards and 7.1 yards per carry.
Illinois’ other option right now is senior Jordan Anderson. He moved from running back to tight end back to running back. He hasn’t been bad, as he has 12 carries for 49 yards this season.
Without Valentine, Illinois is going to be extremely shallow on depth. We moved Kaden Feagin to tight end, so now this is pretty much the Laughery show. Let’s see if he can put the Illinois offense on his back and get this program to a bowl game in 2026.
