The future is bright for the Illinois basketball program, especially when it comes to their status as one of the top destinations in the country for recruits.
The Illini, who rank No. 3 in the 2026 preseason AP Poll, are in the running for top recruits like five-stars Dylan Betts and Brady Pettigrew. They have become regular fixtures in talks for high-profile players, competing with the likes of Duke, Michigan, Florida, Kentucky, and others.
Illinois will continue to compete for top talent in the country in the future, and they will start with class of 2031 guard Braylin Calhoun, who made an unofficial visit to Champaign on Saturday.

Calhoun, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, product, is a 6-foot-4 eighth grader who has been on the rise throughout the prep sports scene, ranking No. 3 in the country earlier this year by Coast2Coast Preps. He is quickly becoming a top name to watch, especially during his time with the KL Power5 program on the Adidas 3Sripes Select basketball circuit.
He has begun his recruiting journey with unofficial visits to Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. He also received his first offer on September 2 from Incarnate Word.
Illinois basketball is getting in early on the battle for Braylin Calhoun
Calhoun may not be in high school yet, but he has already gained a great deal of notoriety throughout the country. He has become a top player to watch when he reaches high school, especially after his success with KL Power5.
Calhoun possesses the perfect player profile of an elite high school recruit, combining great athleticism, defensive prowess, and a 6-foot-4, 180-pound frame that can match up with the best in the country.
The Wisconsin product already has the perfect skill set to build on as he enters high school, and he will continue to develop into an elite prospect who programs across the country would love to sign.
Anything can happen to Calhoun within the next five years, but Brad Underwood and Co. are doing the right thing by talking to him now. He has a chance to be special at the next level, and Illinois has a chance to make him their star of the future.
