After a strong offseason predicated on retention and reloading, Illinois basketball will have its sights set on a Big Ten title.
A top-five team in the country in the eyes of many analysts, Illinois will look to be the king of the Big Ten for the first time since 2022.
Although the roster is loaded with talent, the road to the conference title will not be without its challenges. An imposing two weeks in early February, featuring games against other strong contenders for the regular-season title, will be a major factor in Illinois’ chances.
The stretch begins at home on January 27 against USC, followed by home games on February 2 and 5 against UCLA and Michigan State.
Illinois then goes on the road on February 9 to play at Michigan and closes out the stretch on February 12 at Purdue.

Most of these teams will be near the top of the Big Ten standings throughout the season. These are the teams Illinois plays once this season - other than Purdue - and these games will be incredibly important in terms of tie-breakers.
A dominant 4-1 record through this stretch, which seems accomplishable, would go a long way in helping to secure the title.
A stretch such as this is not ideal, but it does have its benefits. For instance, the first three games of the gauntlet being at home helps.
Having the home crowd behind the Illini could lead to them getting on a roll early, hopefully starting out 3-0. As seen last year, once Illinois gets on a winning roll, it can carry on for a long time.
Likewise, the tough middle of the schedule allows for an easier start and finish to conference play. Getting to ease into the heart of the season helps after a brutal non-conference schedule, and an easy end allows Illinois to get hot right before the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA tournament.
With little turnover, this Illinois roster is battle-tested and should be ready to take on any challenge they come across.
