From on-campus apartment buildings to various academic buildings around campus, the Champaign-Urbana skyline can be seen littered with cranes. The Illini baseball field is no exception.
After a gaudy $5 million anonymous donation, those same construction sites will be apparent at Illinois Field, the home of Illinois baseball.

Behind a $5 million donation, renovations include new and additional seating down both baselines, 1,500+ permanent seatbacks, and new and expanded dugouts with technology upgrades, storage, and bathrooms.

The money will go towards added seating down the first and third baselines, expanded dugouts with improved amenities and upgraded tech, and seatbacks to make the viewing experience much more pleasurable.
While these renovations are great for the fan experience, they can also go a long way in the star recruitment process, something Illinois has found difficult with players in the state of Illinois as of late.
They have had success finding diamonds in the rough locally, but big-name hunting has proven somewhat fruitless.
The investment in Illinois baseball will help the players grow and keep recruits interested in the program
Generally, players want to play in a proper stadium, one where they can feel the energy of the home crowd behind them. A ballpark that emulates the upscale features of a major league park helps sell recruits on coming to Illinois.
Likewise, the new technology features being installed in the dugout can help players improve their game in real time, resulting in Illinois being perceived as a destination where recruits can come and grow.
As a whole, this donation shows what is possible when the team wins, and the athletic department as a whole is in a good state.
Illinois baseball is just two years removed from a Big Ten regular-season championship. While it can not be known exactly why the donor donated the large sum that they did, part of the reason may have been spurred by the recent success.
Moreover, the donation could have been spurred after seeing the recent success of both football and basketball teams, given the massive amount of funding they have received.
When teams are successful, it becomes much more appealing to donate money in an effort to sustain and increase that success. This instance is one such example of that.
While there is no telling exactly how the team will perform next season, at least the fan experience will be greatly improved for fans of the Orange and Blue.
