The Illinois baseball trip to California was a depressing one, as they were swept by the now 19-1 USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field.
It was a trip that the Illini would like to forget, as they were outscored by the No. 20 team in the country by a score of 13-3 across all three games. It was a tough way to finish their first conference series of the year, especially after going 3-0 in Greenville, South Carolina, a week prior.
But this past weekend, Illinois was able to get back on track against their Big Ten rival, the Minnesota Golden Gophers. They were able to go from a 1-3 stretch in their last four games to a 2-1 series win at Illinois Field. It was a big turnaround for an impressive program, and these two performances were pivotal to Illinois' success this past weekend.
Senior Cole Warehime came up clutch in extra innings
The Illini and Minnesota were caught in an intense pitcher's duel this past Friday in Champaign, with Illinois' Mitch Dye and Minnesota's Cole Selvig allowing a combined two runs on nine hits through eleven total innings of work.
These pitching staffs put on a clinic in their Big Ten series opener, keeping the game deadlocked at one run apiece, which led to Illinois' third extra-inning game of the season. But in one of the most crucial moments of the contest, senior outfielder Cole Warehime came up big with a walk-off single to center for his first hit of the game.

Warehime, a transfer from Southeast Missouri State, has been struggling to start the year with a .191/.224/.362 slash-line. But even with a down year for the veteran outfielder, he was still able to send the fans home happy with his bloop to the outfield. He received a well-deserved Gatorade shower in the outfield as a celebration, which will hopefully be the start of a great turnaround as the season progresses.
Freshman Aidan Flinn was dealing in game two of Saturday's doubleheader
It was a weekend full of great pitching performances for the Illini, as they only allowed a total of four runs across their three games against Minnesota. That was certainly the case in game two of Saturday's doubleheader, when Illinois' pitching staff dealt a gem against the now 15-5 Gophers.
Freshman Aidan Flinn had a masterful run through four innings of work, giving up no runs on three hits while striking out four Gophers. He has been emerging as one of the top pitchers on Illinois' staff this season, dropping his earned-run average to 2.38 on the year.
Flinn set the tone early for the Illini after retiring six of the first seven batters he faced. Illinois was able to continue this success even after Flinn's departure, with Kyle Remington and Reed Gannon allowing only two runs in the final five innings of the contest. Thankfully, the offense was able to take advantage of some miscues from Minnesota's side, and didn't let a performance like this go to waste.
