The Illinois baseball program has found a glimmer of hope throughout their rather lackluster 2026 season, with freshman AJ Putty ranking amongst the best the Big Ten has to offer.

Putty, a product of McHenry, Illinois, was the No. 1 first baseman and the No. 22 overall prospect in Illinois coming out of high school. He was a highly touted recruit in the class of 2025 and continued that stellar performance in his first season with the Illini.

Putty has been painting a masterpiece for coach Dan Hartleb's bunch, to the point where he's being ranked highly by reporters like NCAA digital's Michella Chester as one of the most impactful freshmen of the season.

It has been a year for the ages for the superstar first baseman, as Putty is currently leading the program in batting average (.317), hits (59), total bases (97), and RBIs (46) through his first 46 games with the team.

The Huntley High School product has had plenty of memorable moments, which have led to this stellar production, including a record-breaking outing against Coastal Carolina, where he went 5-for-6 at the plate with one home run and seven RBIs.

AJ Putty has a strong chance to be the Big Ten Freshman of the Year

This season, the Big Ten has seen a ton of high-powered freshmen make their presence known for their respective programs. Whether it's OF Angel Laya of the Oregon Ducks or Drew Grego of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, these young stars are proving that the future of Big Ten baseball is in good hands.

When it comes to the top prize of being named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, it is terribly hard not to put Putty in the mix. He has been one of the most dominant underclassmen in the conference, ranking in the top three in almost every major statistical category.

As of writing this, Putty is hitting .400 (4-for-10) in his last two games, but will need to go on a major run to round out the regular season. He will have a chance to make an impact in these final seven games, as Bradley, Northwestern, and Indiana are all sporting ERAs above 6.50.

Putty will still have to deal with the aforementioned Laya and Grego, who will not be going away any time soon. But as of right now, this is a three-horse race for the top prize, and they are all jockeying for position as we come down the stretch.
