The transfer portal has been an incredible tool for Illinois baseball in recent years.

Long-time head coach Dan Hartleb’s keen eye for talent has been able to pick out Illini staples and impactful players at an outstanding rate, with a special interest in Illinois natives.

The team's newest addition fits that mold as catcher Quinn Schambow, a native of Libertyville, Illinois, has announced his transfer to Illinois.

Schambow, a rising sophomore from Oklahoma State University, saw limited playing time in his freshman year. He recorded just four at-bats with one hit across seven games.

Despite the limited time, Schambow should prove to be an incredibly impactful player on the roster. During his senior year of high school, he was named the Prep Baseball Illinois Player of the Year, hitting a gaudy .449 with 47 RBIs.

After the Illini lost both catchers in the offseason, Schambow will look to come in and make an immediate impact, which should be expected given the stark increase in playing time he should receive.

The move should add some much-needed offensive firepower to the Illinois roster, which was near the bottom of the conference in hits, home runs, and batting average.

Likewise, Schambow's young age should add some much-needed stability to the position that is so crucial to team defense.

This addition adds to the Illini’s already strong base of youthful talent, with A.J. Putty and Aidan Flinn sticking around for the 2027 season.

Illinois will look to bounce back after a very mediocre season in 2026, and Schambow’s addition is a positive step forward in that process.
