The Illinois baseball team desperately needed a win this weekend against the No. 19 Oregon Ducks, and they pulled it off in a game where a total of 29 runs were scored.
The Illini, who average roughly 7.1 runs per game this season, needed to get to the Ducks early in their 16-13 upset on Saturday. They needed Oregon's starting pitcher Collin Clarke to make a mistake and not get into a groove that brought him a 2.72 ERA in his first eight starts.
Thankfully, Dan Hartleb's bunch was able to do just that in the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored four runs on RBI hits from Daniel Contreras, J.R. Nelson, and Nick Groves.

That was not enough for the Illini to take control, as the Ducks would eventually come roaring back, with both teams duking it out to the tune of 26 total runs scored prior to the ninth inning. The offense in this game was so potent that both teams exhausted a total of 11 pitchers just to keep up.
But in the ninth inning, with two outs and a 3-2 count, Illinois came through in the clutch to pull off the upset thanks to a three-run home run from junior Kyle Schupmann.

Schupmann sent the crowd home happy with his opposite-field blast while also giving Illinois their fifth win in their last seven games at home.
The Illinois baseball team needed to get the monkey off their back when it comes to their Big Ten schedule
Illinois has certainly had their struggles as of late, losing to teams like the USC Trojans and the Purdue Boilermakers dismally.
But on Saturday afternoon against a quality team like Oregon, the Illini showed a spark that they so desperately needed. They were able to come together as a unit and take down a top pitching staff that ranked No. 5 in the country with a 1.17 WHIP prior to the game.
Illinois' pitching staff didn't do the offense any favors with the number of runs they surrendered. But overall, it just feels good to capitalize against a top-tier team during your biggest home stretch of the season.
Simply put, the Illini have a lot of work to do as they finish up this season. This win was very promising and a bright spot for the future, but we need to see a few more strung together before season's end.
