It was one of the worst weekends for the Illinois football program on the field in the Bret Bielema era.
There have been some ugly losses for the Illini since Bielema took over, but none can compare to falling to a Purdue squad that hadn’t won a Big Ten game in the last few years. Still, the Illini went out there and laid an egg against the Boilermakers.
While the Illini were still licking their wounds, the blow was softened by the fact that Bielema was able to land a commitment over the weekend.
Harry Maileoi took to social media to announce that he will be playing football for the Orange and Blue in 2027.
Thank You ILLINOIS🫡

This is a quality commitment for the Illini. Maileoi is a 6-foot-4, 350-pound offensive lineman from Mt. San Antonio College in California. He isn’t rated or ranked by 247Sports, but he does have offers from teams like Kansas State and California, in addition to the Illini offer.
Harry Maileoi will add to a very experienced Illinois football offensive line in 2027
I love the Maileoi commitment for the Illini. It is hard not to be excited about an offensive lineman who is a mountain like this kid.
What is also exciting is that Maileoi adds to an Illinois offensive line that should remain intact after this season.
Christian Martin has a fifth year next season, and Nathan Knapik is only in his third year. So both of our offensive tackles should be back for at least one more season
Illinois will get Brandon Henderson back at guard. He is only in his fourth year in college and has another year of eligibility. At the other guard spot, Maika Matelau is only in year two, so he has three years left to play in Champaign.
At the end of the day, Illinois is only losing two offensive linemen to aging out. Starting center Jake Renfro will depart after his seventh year, and it wouldn’t shock me to see him in the NFL. Depth piece Dezmond Schuster is also gone after his sixth season.
I fully expect Maileoi to come in and take a primary backup job from day one. With the way Illinois’ offensive line gets hurt and can struggle at times, it wouldn’t shock me to see him get multiple starts in his first year with Illinois, too.
The fact that the Illini will still get three years of Maileoi is exciting. We can have a pretty solid offensive line in 2027, and that is music to my ears. Good football teams are built from the inside out. Maileoi helps that cause.
