Three years ago, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood recruited three-star combo guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn to play for the Fighting Illini, flipping his commitment from the Purdue Boilermakers.
Two years later, Gibbs-Lawhorn entered the transfer portal (for the first time) and took his talents to the UNLV Rebels. Now, after an incredible season for the mid-major, he is taking his talents to one of the most dominant Big 12 programs in the country: the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Gibbs-Lawhorn entered the transfer portal after averaging 20.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game for the Rebels.
Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn commits to Texas Tech and Grant McCasland
With such a great season under his belt, even if it was at the mid-major level, it didn't come as much of a surprise when Gibbs-Lawhorn entered his name into the transfer portal for a second time in his collegiate career.
It also didn't come as much of a surprise when powerhouse programs like Texas Tech expressed their interest in the highly talented guard.
While Gibbs-Lawhorn only started in two total games for the Fighting Illini, he played in 63 matchups, earning 4.3 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, only playing about 11 and a half minutes per appearance.
As Underwood continued to recruit elite players, both out of high school and from the transfer portal, Gibbs-Lawhorn decided it was best for his career to enter the portal, heading to Las Vegas for just one season.

It clearly paid off as Gibbs-Lawhorn more than quadrupled his scoring averages and caught the eye of Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland. In his one season at UNLV, he saw his career stats skyrocket to 10.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.7 blocks per game.
With just one season of eligibility remaining, Gibbs-Lawhorn will spend his senior year in Lubbock, suiting up for the Red Raiders in the highly competitive Big 12 conference.
