The past couple of days have been a little tough for the Illinois football program, as the transfer portal is now more of a thing after the bowl game.

I respect that the players entering the transfer portal waited until after the full season had ended for the Illini. They stuck it out with the team, and now they are trying to better their careers.

That is the case with Tysean Griffin. According to Orange and Blue News on Tuesday, Griffin has decided to enter the transfer portal after two seasons in Champaign.

Griffin was one of the great gets for Bret Bielema. He was a three-star recruit and was ranked as the No. 530 player in the class of 2024. He was also the No. 30 athlete in the country and the No. 14 player coming out of Illinois.

After a redshirt year in 2024, Griffin didn’t record any offensive snaps this season. He is now on the move, looking for a new home.

Illinois football has a wide receiver room that is probably the cause of Tysean Griffin entering the transfer portal

Griffin isn’t the only Illinois wide receiver to be departing the program. Former four-star Malik Elzy announced his departure mid-season. Illinois is also losing Mario Sanders II. So, three wide receivers are now off the depth chart.

Here is the thing. There is a reason those guys are leaving the program, and it is not a money dispute. If you look at the lay of the land, there wasn’t going to be more playing time for them entering next season.

Illinois pretty much rode four wide receivers in 2025. Hank Beatty, Hudson Clement, Justin Bowick, and Collin Dixon each had over 300 snaps, and they were the only wide receivers to see over 70 snaps for the season.

The only one out of that bunch who is departing is Beatty. Illinois will have Clement and Bowick back for their senior year, and Dixon will just be a junior.

Bielema has a clear replacement for Beatty waiting in the wings, too. Brayden Trimble was a massive get for Illinois in the class of 2025. He only played seven snaps this season and took a redshirt. He is the next man up for the Illini in 2026.

This is also another situation where Illinois adds a wide receiver every year in the transfer portal. Look for Bielema to go out and add at least one pass-catcher for the future.

So, to break things down, with the three Illinois wide receiver transfer portal departures, we are losing a combined 72 snaps. That isn’t a big hit to the program. The biggest ramifications are depth, and clearly, Bielema and Barry Lunney Jr. ride with the core-four. Losing Griffin isn’t fun, but it shouldn’t hurt the program when it is all said and done.
