The college volleyball season is on our doorsteps, but just because it hasn't yet gotten underway doesn't mean there isn't already a little drama brewing. Illinois happens to be in the center of some drama, all stemming from the contract extension awarded to head coach Chris Tamas.
Over the weekend, the university announced a contract extension for the long-time head coach, which usually would bring joy to a fanbase; however, this one should leave Illinois fans confused.
Tamas received an extension that will keep him with the team through the 2028 season, the 2028-2029 academic year. Tamas is getting ready to enter his 10th season with the Illini, but his recent history with the team is what has fans scratching their heads about this contract.

Illinois volleyball hasn't seen much success under Chris Tamas since Final Four run in 2018
When looking at Illinois' record under Tamas, to the naked eye, it doesn't seem so bad. The Illini are 162-110 overall and 98-80 in the Big Ten under Tamas, over .500 in both categories, which is usually the benchmark for success as a head coach. Illinois also has five NCAA Tournament appearances in that span with a Final Four appearance in 2018. But when taking a closer look at Tamas' record in Champaign, it isn't as shiny as it seems.
At the beginning of his tenure, Tamas had great success with Illinois, including that 2028 Final Four run; however, since then, it hasn't been sunshine and rainbows. In the last seven seasons, Illinois has missed the NCAA Tournament four times, including the 2025 season, when the Illini finished with their worst record since 2002.
In 2025, Illinois finished with a 13-16 record, missing the NCAA Tournament. Now, heading into the 2026 season, the Illini are predicted to finish 10th in the Big Ten. So, this brings up the question of why Tamas would be earning a contract extension and isn't on the hot seat.
Normally I wouldn't be questioning Josh Whitman's expertise, but this is one of those decisions that has me wondering what he was thinking. Sure, Tamas has had success with Illinois in the past, but now signing him up for at least three more seasons, including the upcoming one, feels like signing up for more misery on the volleyball court.
Even fans had some thoughts on the matter when the announcement was made on social media. Some kept it short and sweet, simply asking why, while another fan went as far as to say that this type of product from a coach wouldn't be acceptable in a sport like basketball or football.
The details of the extension haven't been released, but Tamas will be in Champaign through the 2028-2029 academic year, so fans better buckle up and hope for the best. The Illinois volleyball season unofficially begins August 16 with an exhibition game vs. Bradley, but the official start is when the Illini take on Cincinnati on August 28 in Huff Hall.
