Brooklyn Nets Summer League roster could get jolt from Illinois basketball rookie

Illinois basketball has numerous players floating around the NBA, and one could help the Brooklyn Nets Summer League in a big way.

The NBA Summer League is about to start heating up, and the Illinois basketball program has a few names scattered throughout.

Over the past couple of weeks, multiple Illini have been dabbling in the NBA waters. Keaton Wagler was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers. Kylan Boswell was signed by the Charlotte Hornets. And in the middle of all that, Ben Humrichous signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Brooklyn Nets.

While this deal doesn’t give Humrichous any guarantees, it does get his foot in the door in the NBA. On Thursday, Ian Begley of SNYtv reported out the Nets Summer League roster, and Humrichous is on it.

The first thing I noticed about the roster is that there isn’t much experience on it. It is filled with just rookies or first-year players. The second thing I noticed is that there aren’t any big names on the roster.

Mikel Brown Jr. was their lottery pick, so he will get the most run. Tyler Bilodeau is another rookie that I know. Egor Demin is a first-year player who will likely get a lot of play in the Summer League, too.

There really isn’t a ton of talent on this roster, and that is great for someone like Humrichous.

Humrichous needs to see the court as much as possible, and when he does, he needs to show off his great length and shooting ability. He can light it up from three-point range, and that would jump off the page quickly if he can knock shots down.

The biggest worry for Humrichous is his defense. He can be flatfooted at times and slow off the dribble, but I am sure he has worked this offseason to improve his first step.

Brooklyn Nets Summer League roster differs from what Illinois basketball had with Ben Humrichous

I am excited to see Humrichous play on a higher level than college. The Nets actually play in the earlier Summer League sessions, and they will start Saturday, July 4, at 4:00 p.m. CT/ 5:00 p.m. ET on Prime Video and ESPN+ in the California Classic.

While I was looking at the Nets’ Summer League roster, I did notice something that was a bit puzzling.

Illinois always listed Humrichous at 6-foot-9. Honestly, it always looked like he was 6-foot-9 because he was bigger than most of the players he was going up against. On the Summer League roster, Humrichous is only 6-foot-7.

I don’t know what happened there, but I feel like Humrichous is much closer to 6-foot-9. Just looking at pictures, you can see he is much taller than Keaton Wagler, who is now only listed as just two inches shorter. That is a mystery.
