The Illinois football program hasn’t slowed down when it comes to landing commitments for 2027.
Over the past week or so, the Illini have landed seven commitments for the class of 2027. This enabled us to move into the top 60 nationally, and that number should continue to grow as time goes on.
On Tuesday afternoon, Bret Bielema added another pledge to the list. Tyrone Howard Jr. took to social media to announce that he was committing to the Orange and Blue.

Blessed to officially announce my commitment to the University of Illinois!

Howard is a 6-foot-1.5, 165-pound safety from St. John Neumann High School in Florida. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 1402 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 142 safety in the country and the No. 149 player coming out of Florida.
The decision for Howard came down to a handful of teams, but the fact that he only took an official visit to South Florida and Illinois means that those were likely the final two on his list, with the Illini ultimately winning out.
Illinois is getting a quality safety in Howard. He finished his junior year with 29 tackles, five pass deflections, and three interceptions. It wouldn’t shock me to see his star rise throughout a big senior year, too.
As a track athlete, Howard has a lot to offer Illinois athletically. He is someone who can command a defensive secondary and go up for any ball. I love the versatility of Howard. He can play both safety and cornerback, so having him as, potentially, a nickel defender down the road might not be a bad idea.
Depth is key in the secondary, and Illinois needs to build that depth if we want to continue having success
Since Bielema took over the Illinois football program, I think it is pretty evident that we can develop defensive backs. Not a ton of big-time recruits are entering our secondary, but they leave as NFL talent.
Howard isn’t going to jump off the page. He isn’t a top 1000 recruit, but that doesn’t mean the Illinois coaching staff can’t develop his talent. Just look at Devon Witherspoon. He was a two-star recruit and ended up being the No. 5 overall pick.
There is going to be a long road for Howard to see starts, but with this coaching staff and his athletic ability, don’t be surprised if this kid makes waves in the next couple of years.
