Bret Bielema skeptical of projected flip of top Illinois football commit

The Illinois football program may be in for a rude awakening if this recruit flips to their conference rival.

The Illinois football team may be in dire straits right now, as multiple recruiting analysts are now predicting a massive flip that would hurt the program.

The Illini have had a solid start to the class of 2027. We have two commits right now, with our top guy being quarterback Kamden Lopati.

Well, it now looks like Illinois is not the favorite to retain Lopati anymore, as multiple recruiting outlets are predicting him to flip to Big Ten foe, Michigan.

Lopati, a four-star recruit from Salt Lake City, Utah, is currently the No. 9-ranked quarterback in the class of 2027, according to 247sports. He has had a hard commitment in place with the Illini since July 2025, but a recent visit to Ann Arbor may have helped to flip the young man to the Maize and Blue.

The West High School product has been one of the top dual-threat signal callers in the country over the past two seasons, throwing for 59 total touchdowns and only 12 interceptions on 5,721 passing yards. Lopati was poised to be one of the quarterbacks of the future for Bret Bielema, with Katin Houser and Carson Boyd already rostered.

But now, with Michigan deep in the fold, it looks like the Illini may be in danger of losing one of their prized talents in next year's recruiting class. Head coach Kyle Whittingham will look to bring in the young signal caller after a less-than-stellar start to quarterback Bryce Underwood's career.

Bret Bielema has thoughts on a potential Kamden Lopati flip from the Illinois football program

As always, we as fans should never negatively judge a player based on where they decide to play. This is a personal decision for these athletes based on what they think is best for them, and to bash them in any way is childish and wrong.

But having said that, the thought of losing Lopati to a conference foe like Michigan is going to be a tough pill to swallow for Illinois fans. Lopati, who could compete for the starting role with Illinois after Hauser's departure, has the size and the throwing power that any program could desperately use under center.

Bret Bielema chimed in on the possibility of losing Lopati. He isn't buying into everything that is being floated around social media just yet.

Granted, nothing is set in stone right now, as Lopati hasn't made his decision yet on where he wants to play. But in an offense that excelled with the somewhat mobility of Luke Altmyer last season, a much beefier passer with the ability to use his legs could do wonders for Bielema.

Here's hoping Lopati doesn't go to the dark side, but we will have to wait and see what he decides.
