Illinois fans may not see a lot of recognizable faces take the field this season. Going into the 2026 football season, head coach Bret Bielema will only see 50% of his starting roster from 2025 back on the field, with only one starter back along the offensive line.
Last season, Bielema saw his entire offensive line return to help protect the precious arm of Luke Altmyer. With a quarterback of that caliber, it was crucial that Bielema field an offensive line with chemistry and a lot of snaps in the uniform. Now, heading into the 2026 season, Illinois will not only see a new quarterback, but nearly an entirely new offensive line.
While the offensive line won't be comprised of many players who have taken a lot of snaps in an Illinois uniform, Bielema doesn't seem too worried about the line he has built to this point. He actually named just about every starter he intends at each position on the line during his Big Ten Media Days press conference.

Right guard Brandon Henderson is the only returning starter for Illinois, and his fellow teammate, Nathan Knapik, who is working to earn the right tackle position, is the only other potential starter who wore an Illinois uniform last season.
Can Bret Bielema's new offensive line gel in time to protect Katin Houser?
One of the toughest parts of building an offensive line is getting all five guys to gel together. It is hard to just put someone else on the line. That's why you don't see rotation on the offensive line the way you do with defensive linemen.
With nearly an entire new line and a new quarterback under center, Bielema is going to have to plug and chug to see which guys fit. Granted, spring ball helped answer the question of who would be on the line, but based on Bielema's right tackle comments, that position could still see a battle brewing.
Bielema makes a good point, though, that even though a lot of the line may not have snaps in an Illinois uniform, having snaps at the college level in general is still valuable. Christian Martin and Jake Renfro both have snaps at the Division I level, while Maika Matelau has a lot of snaps at the JUCO level. It may take some time for Matelau to fully get up to speed, but this is an experienced line, just not experienced together.
Fall camp will be the biggest time for this line to gel and figure out how to play to the best of its ability in front of Katin Houser. While nothing is set in stone until Week 1, Bielema said he knew he would have to put together a whole new line this season and made sure he and his coaching staff were prepared for it.
