If there is one thing that Illinois head coach Bret Bielema is good at (other than coaching football), it is saying the controversial thing at the right time. Big Ten Media Days kicked off today in Chicago, Illinois, with Bielema starting things off at the podium.
Bielema began with a nearly six-minute opening statement, talking about the state of Illinois football, but also the state of Illinois Athletics, making sure to praise Josh Whitman for his work in Champaign. Bielema, who played football at Iowa, was also happy to praise the Big Ten for the success it has had recently, especially with three straight National Championships.
That is where Bielema gave the best quote he could have throughout his entire press conference. Bielema spent time in the SEC and with the different commissioners, including current commissioner Greg Sankey. He has seen how college football has grown, and especially how the Big Ten has grown, and he believes if the SEC had it their way, they would "live in 2005 forever."

When asked to expand: "I think I just made the headline, right?"
When asked about that statement later, Bielema knew he made the headlines there, and he certainly isn't wrong. There is not a lot of love lost between Bielema and the SEC, a conference in which he has beaten two of its teams in a bowl game each of the last two seasons.

The SEC has always been seen as the powerhouse of college football. For years, it was a battle of which SEC team would win it all. Would it be Nick Saban...again, at Alabama, or Kirby Smart at Georgia? Sometimes LSU and Auburn made some appearances at the top, but it was typically the SEC reigning supreme.
In the last three years, though, it has been a Big Ten team raising the National Championship trophy: Michigan in 2023, Ohio State in 2024, and Indiana in 2025. The Big Ten has broken through the shield that is the SEC in college football, taking the throne and has no plans to give it back.
Bielema sees the changes and growth the Big Ten has been through, especially having spent significant time in the conference between Illinois and Wisconsin. Those changes and adapting to the world of the Transfer Portal and NIL are what helped a team like Ohio State win it all in 2024 with a $20 million roster.
Even though Bielema tried talking his way around his dig at the SEC, it's clear he was taking a shot at the conference that thinks of itself in a high and mighty way in college football. You can always count on Bielema to ruffle some feathers in one way or another, and this year, it was the SEC he was aiming for.
