Bret Bielema has been on a tear with recruiting, as he has secured 12 commitments since June 1, 2026, for the Illinois football program.
The Illini have been strong in recent years, as they just finished recording the most wins in a two-year span in program history at 19 victories. Bielema is systematically turning the program into something special, and he is doing it through smart recruiting and calculating acquisitions through the transfer portal.
Bielema is prepared to build this team for the future, especially as we move towards the class of 2028 and beyond. He is looking to bring in key players who can make an impact rather quickly, and just recently, he may have found one in three-star defensive lineman Charles Ibe.

— Charles “chuck” Ibe (@CharlesIbe_) July 14, 2026
Ibe, a product of Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina, reclassified in April 2025 to become a member of the class of 2028. In his first two seasons with Providence, the 6-foot-2 Ibe recorded a total of 102 tackles, 19 quarterback hits, 14 tackles for a loss, and five sacks.
The three-star recruit has been receiving a lot of attention over the past number of years from programs across the country, including teams like Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Miami (FL), and Kansas State. If Ibe commits to the program soon, he will be Bielema's first reported commitment for the class of 2028.
Charles Ibe has a chance to bolster an Illinois defense that needs a shot in the arm
Illinois saw a major overhaul on the defensive side of the ball, with Bielema hiring former University of Montana head coach Bobby Hauck to be his defensive coordinator. The eight-time Big Sky champion has seen great success on the defensive side of the ball, ranking in the top 10 in the nation in turnovers in three of the last five seasons.
Hauck will bring a refreshed look to the defense, as he will be implementing a 3-3-5 defense, where Ibe would fit in perfectly. The 6-foot-2, 290*pound defender has the size and skill set to thrive in a situation like this, especially after playing in a 3-4 defense in high school.
If Ibe comes to Champaign, then he will certainly have a leg-up on the competition when it comes to playing time. As a sophomore, he already measures as one of the bigger linemen in the country, and he still has two more years to grow. Not only that, the technical aspect of his game is superb, and is only improving by the day.
Simply put, Ibe is a great prospect for the future of this defense, especially in a powerful conference like the Big Ten that can provide a variety of different looks on offense.
