Bret Bielema is beefing up the Illinois football roster with another in-state commitment

Illinois football is eyeing another top 25 recruiting class, and this big addition on Thursday helps the cause.

As soon as the doubt starts creeping in about an Illinois football recruiting class, Bret Bielema proves me wrong.

I have started to doubt what the Illini might put together for the class of 2027. Coming off a top 25 recruiting class in 2026, Bielema had a lot on his plate when it came to what the Orange and Blue can do on the recruiting trail. Can Illinois put together another talented group?

On Thursday morning, we continued the push to build that great recruiting class, as Soren Fifer took to social media to announce his commitment to Illinois.

Fifer is a 6-foot-7, 295-pound offensive tackle from Morton High School in Illinois. He is rated as a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 583 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 50 offensive tackle in the country and the No. 22 player coming out of Illinois.

With roughly 13 scholarship offers on the table, most from solid power-four programs, Fifer’s only official visit was scheduled for Champaign on the weekend of June 12. That visit is still going to be big for the Illini, but it is now going to be less stressful.

Illinois is clearly focusing on the offensive line and building from the ground up. We have started to rely more on the transfer portal and the junior college route, but it is nice to see the potential of having homegrown in-state talent potentially starting for the program in the future.

I love that Bret Bielema is tapping into in-state talent for the Illinois football program

One of the main topics Bielema discussed when he took over at Illinois a half-decade ago was keeping in-state kids home. There is plenty of talent in the state of Illinois, and we need to bring that talent into the building.

The class of 2027 is shaping up to be a solid in-state recruiting haul thus far. The first domino to fall was cornerback Justin Johnson. He is out of Evanston.

Mason Halliman committed to the Illini in the past week. He is an offensive tackle as well, and he hails from Frankfort, Illinois.

Now, the Illini have secured another in-state talent in Fifer. Morton is a hop, skip, and jump away from Champaign, so securing a top 600 recruit who just happens to be down the road is big for the program.

The crazy part of Illinois landing both Halliman and Fifer in the past week is that they weren’t even a part of the big recruiting month of June that is coming up. Fifer now has a visit scheduled in June, but there were double-digit recruits visiting in June, and that could really help springboard the class of 2027 to another level.

Bielema keeps delivering high-level talent. This is only the start of, potentially, another top 25 recruiting class.
