Bret Bielema has SEC fans in their feelings after the Illinois football win over Nebraska

Illinois football won another game, and it was a perfect opportunity for Bret Bielema to take a bit of a shot at the SEC.

The Illinois football team is coming off a big win over Nebraska that clinches the program a bowl trip.

This is the third straight season that Illinois will be bowling. It has been a great comeback season for the Illini, as we started the year 2-3 and things were looking dismal. Now, Bret Bielema has helped guide the program to a 6-3 record and another bowl game.

In the postgame press conference after beating Nebraska on Friday night, Bielema was doing his usual talking, but then he dropped a bomb that I am sure SEC fans will take well.

“6-3. We beat another 5-3 team. If we were in the SEC, we would probably be a top 15 team, right?”

Immediately after Bielema said those words, you could see a little grin form on his face. He knows exactly what he is doing, and it is a masterful troll job at play.

The classic go-to for any fan of an SEC team is that Bielema didn’t succeed at Arkansas, so he is a bad coach. One quote I got was, “you WERE in the SEC Bret, and you couldn’t hack it.”

I am not kidding when I say the SEC has the most sensitive fanbase in college football. Here are just a few comments from an On3.com post about the quote on social media.

Arkansas isn’t a good job. There aren’t many coaches who can win consistently there. Bielema had three winning seasons in five years. That isn’t terrible, considering they were playing the likes of Alabama and Georgia, who both had deep pockets at a time when we hid that stuff.

I would venture to say the Razorbacks would jump at the chance to take Bielema back right now. They are a dumpster-fire program, so it is funny when fans of big programs take shots at Bielema, like he failed at Alabama or something.

It makes me happy every time Bielema makes one of these tongue-in-cheek comments. SEC fans get riled up, and it entertains me.

One of the biggest reasons that Bielema can say these things is that Illinois has been successful against the SEC.

As I mentioned before, Illinois is about to make a third straight bowl game. The first two were against SEC teams, South Carolina and Tennessee, and Illinois beat both of those programs.

SEC fans have to realize that the Illini own the SEC. You struggle to beat us, even when we have our top players depart for the NFL Draft before the bowl game.

Bret Bielema got SEC Nation riled up, but he is wrong about Illinois football at the end of the day

It is fun to see Bielema troll the SEC because they are so sensitive. Bielema knows what he is doing, and when you actually dissect his words, he isn’t right.

Illinois is on a tremendous run right now, winning four straight games and getting to 6-3. If you look at the College Football Playoff rankings, there isn’t a team with three losses in the top 20, let alone in the top 15.

The first team with three losses is indeed an SEC team in South Carolina. They sit at No. 21, though.

If Illinois keeps playing like this, we could end up in the College Football Playoff rankings by season’s end. For now, Bielema is doing a masterful job of trolling the SEC fanbase. It is nice side entertainment.
