In college, Bret Bielema played nose guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes. These days, the Illinois Fighting Illini head coach is still built like he could step onto the field for a defensive line.

Earlier in the week, the Illinois football social media team released a video of players signing a 20 MPH road sign, agreeing that they would hit that speed this season.

Bielema, who hasn't played football in over three decades, had a perfect response to the speed challenge: "I signed my 5 MPH club but apparently didn’t make this video."

A few of the players, such as junior defensive back Jaheim Clarke, even promised to go faster than 20 MPH, citing speeds of 22 and higher as they walked up to the speed limit signs.

For reference, the fastest speed ever recorded by an NFL player was 23.24 MPH, which Tyreek Hill hit in 2016. Four years later, Raheem Mostert clocked in at 23.09 mph, but Hill's record is still seemingly untouchable. However, the Fighting Illini squad will try as they might to surpass this mile marker.

Wideout Justin Bowick, who transferred to Illinois from Ball State this offseason, is well known for his athleticism and speed, so fans should keep an eye out for just how quickly he can make it downfield.

At the end of the video, quarterback Luke Altmyer shared that he ran a "20.6" the week before, breaking the speed limit listed on the sign he proceeded to add his signature to.

"Fly fast, sting hard. You know what I mean?" Altmyer said. "That's what I do."

The Fighting Illini will kick off their season with a game against the Western Illinois Leathernecks. The two teams are scheduled to play at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29. As of now, the game is set to be streamed on Peacock.
