You can’t win them all, and the recruitment of Jaxson Davis is a prime example of that.
Illinois basketball has been involved in numerous recruitments from the jump. Davis is no exception, as he was one of the best players in the country.
Davis is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 35 player in the class of 2027. He is also the No. 10 point guard in the country and the best player in Kansas.
With the way Illinois is spending right now, there is no doubt we could have afforded Davis. I mean, we are currently in the running for five-star recruits in this class. On Saturday afternoon, the Illini bowed out of the Davis sweepstakes.
Joe Tipton of On3.com reported that Davis was down to just Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa, Creighton, Marquette, and Minnesota. That leaves Illinois on the outside looking in, and it did come as a bit of a surprise.

Davis is one of the most decorated players to come out of the state of Illinois. He took home the last two Illinois Mr. Basketball Awards, and he won the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year award.
Despite that fact, Brad Underwood couldn’t get Davis to come to Champaign. I believe there is one big reason for this.
A change of scenery.

When you grow up in a state, you don’t necessarily want to always live there, especially in your younger college years. You want to expand your horizons and see what the world has to offer.
I think, at the end of the day, Davis wants to see what is out there for him. He didn’t want to stick around in the state of Illinois, and there are a few reasons I believe this.
Davis didn’t have a single in-state school in his top six. He could have easily left Northwestern in there, as they are just down the road from Warren Township High School in Gurnee. Nope, the Wildcats and Illini, among other in-state programs, are nowhere to be found.
Secondly, there is a reason Davis’ recruiting profile doesn’t say Warren Township as his high school. He moved to Kansas for his final year to play prep basketball at Monarch Academy. Ironically, Illinois’ top commit, Quinton Kitt, plays for Monarch as well.
I think it is pretty clear why Illinois was left out of Davis’ top six. He wants to break out of what he has been doing for the past 17-18 years, and he wants to experience something new. I don’t blame him one bit. While it would have been nice to see him in Orange and Blue, we now have some bigger fish to catch.
