It was hard to fight back the tears from Illinois basketball's Final Four loss to UConn on Saturday night, especially after waiting so long for them to get back there.
This Illini team holds a special place in our hearts, especially after recording their longest run in the NCAA tournament since 2005. Their toughness and heart throughout the season have given fans across the country something to look forward to and a belief that the future is extremely bright.
The Illinois basketball program is in a special place with Brad Underwood at the helm. For some fans, they may beg to differ when it comes to that point. But after watching his interview during the postgame scrum, it's hard not to want to run through a brick wall for the man.

Underwood, who just finished his ninth season with the Illini, was obviously emotional after Illinois' 71-62 loss to Dan Hurley and the Huskies at Lucas Oil Stadium. His emotions were on full display during the first Final Four media scrum of his career, showing just how much he loves and cares for this team.
It was a special moment for the top man in the program during a depressing situation. In a moment where Underwood could've talked about mistakes and game plans, he focused more on the relationships of his players and the memories that this season created.
In college sports, we talk about how players need to "buy in" to the program and the coach. But in this one moment, even though we already know how invested Underwood is in this program, it was just another example of how much he loves the game of basketball and how much he truly cares.
Illinois basketball's future is so bright after a tough semifinal loss
Right now, the feeling in Champaign for some may seem bleak. We may have a disgusting taste in our mouths after a season full of hope came crashing down on the grandest stage of them all. But even though we are in mourning, there is still a lot to look forward to with this team.
Sure, Illinois will lose Kylan Boswell, and will most likely lose freshman Keaton Wagler to the NBA Draft. They will certainly need to find a replacement for these two players, who accounted for big minutes both on the offensive and defensive side of the court.
But with the big head of steam that was created from this tournament run, and names like Quentin Coleman coming to Champaign in the fall, the Illinois basketball program has quickly turned into a hot spot in the country for players to go to.
The Illini have a chance to build something beautiful for years to come, and this one loss in the NCAA tournament Final Four will just become a stepping stone to their future success.
