While the Illinois football team is anxiously waiting for some big official visits starting this weekend, the 2026 squad added some talent.
For the most part, the Illini have buttoned up the class of 2026. That class ranked inside the top 25 nationally, but Bret Bielema isn’t done filling some voids left by departing players.
On Monday, Deon Williams took to social media to announce that he has signed with Illinois.

Williams is a 6-foot-1, 290-pound defensive lineman from City College of San Francisco in the junior college ranks. He wasn’t rated or ranked by 247Sports, but he had some impressive recruiting attention.
Illinois was able to pull Williams away from some big-time programs. Among the offers that he had were Louisville, Colorado, Kansas, and Kansas State.
This addition isn’t going to be groundbreaking on paper, as Williams had just 25 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss last season. But there is a reason so many power-four programs wanted Williams on their team. He is a freak athlete.
Williams isn’t a big guy in stature, but he is incredibly quick off the line of scrimmage. He can jump the snap so well, and this enables him to get around offensive linemen and get to the ball carrier more easily.
There is always a need for depth on the Illinois football defensive line
I can’t complain when it comes to Illinois adding pieces to the defensive line. This is an area that has been such a roller coaster in the Bielema era. We had excellent defensive line play in the first couple of years under Bielema, but the position group has become patchwork over the last few years.
Illinois’ defensive line will have plenty of question marks for the 2026 season. We lost our entire starting front three, and that leaves a ton of snaps to be had.
There isn’t anyone who stands out in the pack, either. Williams could come into the program and compete for snaps and a starting job from day one. He will get his chance, most likely at the end of the defensive line.
I love this addition for the Orange and Blue. The scholarship offers say there is a ton of talent just bubbling at the surface. I am excited to see Illinois tap into Williams’ full potential.
