A big-bodied Illinois football wideout just smashed into the transfer portal

The transfer portal opened up Friday morning, and it looks like this Illinois receiver will be stepping through it.

Illinois football head coach Brett Bielema's receiver corps just dwindled a little more on Friday with junior wideout Justin Bowick officially entering the transfer portal.

Bowick, who played just one year with the Illini, will be looking for greener pastures elsewhere after Illinois' win against the Tennessee Volunteers in the Music City Bowl. He will be looking for his fourth school in his collegiate career after stops at Eastern Illinois and Ball State.

Prior to his arrival in Illinois, Bowick had a rather impressive tenure with Eastern Illinois, racking up 48 receptions for 749 yards and eight touchdowns across his two years with the team. He would later transfer to Ball State, where Bowick would record the third-most receiving yards (383) and touchdowns (3) in just four games with the program.

Bowick would then end up with Bielema's squad after another transfer, where the big-bodied wideout would haul in the most receiving touchdowns for the Illini (5), but the fourth-most receptions (22).

Bowick will have one year of eligibility remaining for whatever school he signs with.

How big of a blow is the Justin Bowick transfer portal entry for the Illinois football team?

Prior to his arrival in Champaign, the idea surrounding Bowick was that he could become that big-bodied go-to wideout who could take control of the offense. His ability to create space with his size and speed at Ball State made him a key target for coach Bielema and Co.

The problem that arose is that this dream didn't come to fruition. Bowick didn't get anywhere close to number one receiver attention, and his production declined in the process. Even though he had the most receiving touchdowns for Illinois, he still saw career lows in almost every other metric.

The Boswick experience just didn't work out, and now he becomes the fourth Illinois wide receiver to depart from the team (3 Transfer Portal, 1 Graduation) this offseason. It's a bummer that it ended like this because I truly feel like we could've seen a complete turnaround from him next season. But with this new era of college athletics that we're in, it's just something that we need to expect every offseason.
