3. Luke Altmyer has one major flaw
It is honestly hard to pull any negatives from the win over Western Illinois. This was a game that Illinois took control of early on, and we let off the gas midway through the third quarter.
I would like to point out one major flaw in Luke Altmyer’s game, though. He has done so much right, and his game has progressed tremendously the last couple of seasons. But he holds on to the ball way too long.
Altmyer had a great game against Western Illinois. He was 17-of-21 for 217 yards and three touchdowns. You can’t ask for much more than that. Sadly, there were a handful of plays in which Altmyer tried to do too much and held onto the football.
The last thing Illinois needs is for a backbreaking injury to a team like Western Illinois. Altmyer would try to extend the play in certain situations, and Western Illinois would get to him, and it would be terrifying every time. He needs to learn how to throw the ball away. Altmyer also needs to learn how to slide, but I digress.
Bret Bielema even mentioned it while heading to the halftime locker room. Altmyer is a great quarterback, and I dare say, he has an NFL arm. But if he keeps holding onto the ball, he is going to see the IR more than the field this season.
