The Illinois football team continues to build a competitive program that puts players into the next level, with 15 players being drafted into the NFL since 2022.
Bret Bielema is doing a great job with developing young talent into promising stars and is steadily bringing the Illini to the upper tier of college football. He is turning Illinois into a special place in the Big Ten through his recruiting, and especially through the culture that he is building.
It has been an impressive run for the Illinois football program as of late, and there's a chance it could get even better with one of their top recruiting targets recently decommitting from a conference rival.
Darrell Mattison, a four-star recruit from Chicago, recently reopened his recruiting process after decommitting from the Michigan Wolverines. The 6-foot-1 safety from Morgan Park High School is currently the No. 23-ranked safety in the country and the No. 11 recruit from Illinois in the class of 2027.

Mattison has been a highly coveted defensive back out of high school, with Illinois being one of the 24 schools to extend him an offer prior to his commitment to Michigan. His name should certainly be at the top of Illinois' big board, especially with four of their safeties graduating at the end of this year.
Darrell Mattison has a chance to lock down the Illinois football secondary for the foreseeable future
Mattison is a special talent who has a chance to follow in the footsteps of greats like Matthew Bailey and Miles Scott if he signs with the Illini. When it comes to his scouting report, the young man was described by Rivals' Allen Trieu as so;
"Former wide receiver who brings those ball skills to the defensive side of the ball. Rangy, instinctive prospect who can be a center-fielder and take away the middle of the field. No verified speed but shows closing ability to the ball. Fluid, changes direction well. Willing tackles and plays with some physicality but needs to add weight and get stronger. Makes a lot of plays, gets his hands on a lot of passes, and should be high-level starting free safety type with some room for moving around in college."
This young man has shown great awareness and development at the high school level, which led to 47 tackles, five interceptions, and three pass deflections during his junior season at Morgan Park.
The fact that Mattison is a converted wide receiver also speaks volumes to who he is as a player, with his sticky hands and his willingness to learn another position being two key factors that certainly elevate his status in my book.
This would be an electric signing for Bret Bielema, as Mattison could become another elite defender for the Illini to build around for an extended period of time, especially with Illinois' ability to retain key players.
