Illinois has officially stepped into the world of jersey sponsorships, and it began with an interesting choice. The Illini athletic director, Josh Whitman, announced a deal with Busey Bank, a five-year $30 million deal that will have fans seeing the logo for the bank as a patch on every Illinois sports uniform.
While some fans are happy that college sports are moving to the NASCAR-type feel of jersey sponsorships, it has been slow-moving to this point. It was approved by the NCAA back in January of this year, but only a few teams have taken advantage of the extra sponsorship money, including Illinois.
A milestone for Illinois.

Illinois fans may not love the move, but it is a smart one when it comes to trying to compete money-wise with the bigger programs. It helps smaller programs like Illinois get some extra cash for whatever is needed within the athletic department.
Some fans are on board with the decision; however, they question the choice of sponsor, Busey Bank. Not many fans seem to know much about the bank, but with this type of sponsorship being so new to the college sports world, some companies might be hesitant to go all out.
Honestly, it is a fair question when there are so many other companies Illinois could have gone with, even some with big names attached to them.
3. Wintrust Bank
If Illinois wants to go with a bank, Wintrust seems like the better option, as sometimes it feels like you can't go more than a stone's throw away without seeing one. With the bank based out of Rosemont, Champaign is about a two and a half hour drive away, but there are multiple community locations throughout the state.
Wintrust could be one that would give Illinois a better deal, but that depends on whether those conversations were had with the company. Maybe the size of Busey Bank is a better one to try out the sponsorship with first before going bigger.
2. United Airlines
Even though not everyone loves United Airlines, their main hub is in Chicago, Illinois, which is around a two-hour drive from Champaign. This kind of sponsorship would be great for Illinois, especially when teams need to travel, although if the planes aren't too comfy, the players may not love it so much.
However, the proximity again is a great reason that United Airlines would be a great choice over Busey Banks. United Airlines could also be more of a money-maker for the Illini when it comes to a deal, but maybe this is a sponsorship better saved for the future.
1. State Farm
This could be a bit of a stretch, especially with how large a brand State Farm is. The insurance company has elite athletes like Patrick Mahomes and Caitlin Clark repping their brand, so getting them to cut a deal with Illinois could be a far reach.
It would make sense, though, since the headquarters for State Farm is in Bloomington, Illinois. Imagine having someone like Jake from State Farm coming to Champaign for games because of the sponsorship they have with Illinois. It could be an awesome deal, and certainly better than Busey Bank.
