I believe the Illinois offense has enough talent to be dangerous this season.
If the defense ever gets their stuff together, the Illini could put together a good 2026 campaign. That Illinois offense has the weapons to do some special things, and now we get a Southern Illinois squad that doesn’t have the horses like an FBS program.
This needs to be a big-time rebound game for the Orange and Blue. We have to come out and take care of business. If that doesn’t happen from the start, Southern Illinois will gain confidence. We don’t want that.
Here are three keys for the Illinois football offense to torch Southern Illinois’ defense
1. Take advantage of the red zone
Illinois has been able to put up points this season. The offense had a hiccup against Duke at the end, but they have been a bright spot this season.
I think there is an issue to fix against Southern Illinois. The Illini need to do better in the red zone, and this is a perfect opportunity.
Illinois isn’t a great red zone program. We are only converting 83.3% of red zone trips. That is bad enough to rank No. 76 in the country.
Thankfully, Southern Illinois has a bad red zone defense. They are giving up scores 87.5% of the time to opponents in the red zone.
When the Illini get down in the red zone, we have to come away with points. We can’t let any scoring opportunity slip away. Against Duke, we only converted 67% of red zone opportunities. That could have changed the game completely.
2. Katin Houser needs to show Southern Illinois an FBS quarterback
The Illini can’t mess around and let Southern Illinois think they can compete with us. That will take Katin Houser burying the Salukis from the opening kickoff.
Houser has had a pretty good season, throwing for 453 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. He could be in for a big game against Southern Illinois, too.
This season, the Salukis are allowing their opponents to throw for 209 yards per game. That ranks No. 54 in the FCS. Illinois can take advantage of this poor pass defense. We have the horses on the outside, and I fully expect Collin Dixon to build on his incredible first half last week.
I think another thing to note is the red zone passing attack. I touched on Illinois needing to be better in the red zone, and Southern Illinois is the defense we can take advantage of. Out of the seven scores the Salukis have allowed in the red zone this season, four of the scores have come through the air. Houser can be dangerous inside the 20-yard-line.
3. Illinois just needs a solid game out of the offensive line
It is tough what the Illini are going through right now. The offensive line didn’t have much depth heading into the season, but now we are in desperation mode.
Illinois has lost our starting right guard for a few weeks. His backup, TJ McMillen, is now out for the season. That leaves a rotation of potential options, which includes a true freshman.
Barry Lunney Jr. can’t handle anymore injuries to the offensive line. If a tackle gets hurt, we are cooked. On Saturday, I just want to see the Illini offensive line play a solid game. No issues. Don’t do anything special. Just block.
Houser is the player who makes or breaks Illinois football. Don’t let him get touched. This isn’t a great Southern Illinois squad. Keep Houser upright, and we should be okay.
