3 Illinois players who have exceeded preseason expectations through tough 3-3 start

Illinois is midway through the 2026 season, and even though it hasn't been the brightest of seasons for the Illini, these three players have really shone.

Illinois hit the bye week at the perfect time, with the halfway point of the season officially here. While the Illini probably aren't happy to be 3-3, things could be a lot worse with the way this team has performed in some matchups.

Now, head coach Bret Bielema will face his toughest task after the break, with quarterback Katin Houser going down with a hand injury and backup Michael Clayton II stepping into the starting role. Luckily, Clayton has some great talent around him, talent that has exceeded preseason expectations, which will hopefully help him make the transition.

Six games into the season, these three guys have not just been the top of their position groups, but have performed better than anyone believed they would.

3. DB Matthew Bailey

The expectations for Matthew Bailey were already high before the season began, but there were also a lot of questions about how he would return from the shoulder surgery he underwent at the end of the 2025 season. Well, if anyone thought Bailey wouldn't be ready to go, or at full strength, he has easily proved them wrong through the first six games.

Typically, linebackers will be the guys leading defenses in tackles, being in the middle of the field and having the first crack at running backs and wide receivers on the run. Well, Bailey is proving that to be a false narrative, at least in Illinois' case. Bailey is leading the Illinois defense in tackles with 41 and solo tackles with 25, nine more than the guy behind him. Bailey also has one of only two interceptions for the Illini this season, which he returned for a touchdown against Southern Illinois.

Bailey could have easily gone to the NFL after his 2025 season, but instead chose to stick around for another year at Illinois, and it has paid off big time. The fifth-year senior's play so far this season should be enough to raise his draft stock, and with six games left, he could play his way into the first or second round.

2. RB Aidan Laughery

Aidan Laughery is in his fifth season with the Illini, and even with that kind of experience with Bielema, it looked like Ca'Lil Valentine was going to take over this run game. Now, Valentine suffered a season-ending injury against Purdue just five games into the season, but even before then, Laughery was the clear top back.

On 62 carries, Laughery has 391 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown, and averages a massive 6.3 yards per carry. Going into the season, this was going to be a split backfield, but with the Valentine injury, Laughery has really stepped up.

With Houser now down for a while, or the rest of the season, the run game could become even more important, giving Laughery even more of a chance to step up and really shine as the lead back.

1. WR Collin Dixon

There were high expectations for Collin Dixon before the season began, stepping into the shoes of 2025 leading receiver Hank Beatty. It was expected that Dixon would come in and lead the Illini in receiving yards like Beatty, Pat Bryant, and other recent top WRs, but what Dixon has done so far this season is way more than anyone believed he would.

Not only is Dixon leading Illinois in receiving yards, but in touchdowns as well, and is on pace to break quite a few records in Champaign. So far this season, Dixon has 608 receiving yards, over 200 more yards than Hudson Clement, who is second in yards, nine of the Illini's 14 total receiving touchdowns, and averages 12.9 yards per catch.

Dixon was the main target for Houser, who will now miss the majority of the rest of the season, if not the entirety of it. When the rest of the receivers were slow to get going this season, Dixon was like a cheat code for the offense, making insane catches and simply always being open.

So far, Dixon has already broken the record for most touchdowns in a single season at Gies Memorial Stadium and is already threatening the single-season touchdown record held by Pat Bryant. Dixon is also in play to break the overall career touchdown record, held by David Williams, which is 24. Heading into the bye week, Dixon has nine touchdowns, but with Michael Clayton II now stepping in, the offense could look a little different.
