Illinois football brought in one of the best recruiting classes in program history in 2026.
This group of players will come into the program and give the Illini depth. They are the future foundation of what success is to come.
Some of the young guys could even make an impact the first year in Champaign. These are a few who I eye as immediate impact guys.
Here are three Illinois freshmen who are poised to make an immediate impact
Nas Rankin – Wide Receiver
One of the four-star recruits Illinois snagged from the class of 2026 is Nas Rankin. He is arguably the best athlete the Illini are bringing into the program, and he could easily show that in year one.
I will be curious to see how Rankin navigates through the depth at wide receiver. Illinois brought in transfer portal additions like Jayshon Platt and Alex Perry, and they will team up with returning starters Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement.
Rankin is definitely going to have to fight for snaps as a freshman. I think he will get those snaps because of his natural athletic ability and hands. Don’t be shocked if he is one of the best freshmen in the Big Ten, and Illinois leans on Rankin throughout the 2026 campaign.
- Prediction: 0 starts, 23 receptions, 303 yards, 2 touchdowns
Nick Hankins Jr. – Cornerback
I believe Nick Hankins Jr. is in the same boat as Rankin. These players have insane athletic ability, and they are coming into a program that has depth at their position.
Hankins doesn’t register on my two-deep depth chart right now, but that doesn’t mean I am not wrong and he doesn’t make an impact in year one. I fully expect Hankins to emerge through the depth and to make an impact early on in 2026.
Illinois brought in Jakwon Morris, who was a great addition in the junior college market. He should get a starting job. Juice Clarke is another starter at cornerback. Beyond those two, I think Hankins could easily win a second-string job. If that happens, he is going to get plenty of time this season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a start or two, either.
- Prediction: 2 starts, 24 tackles, 2 pass deflections, 1 interception
Champ Smith – Offensive Tackle
Nearly the entire Illinois offensive line is new in 2026. The only returning starter is right guard Brandon Henderson. That means there is a chance for someone like freshman Champ Smith to rise in the ranks.
Smith was another four-star recruit Illinois landed in the class of 2026. We flipped him from UCLA, and this could end up being a big-time addition.
On one end of the offensive line, I believe Nathan Knapik is going to be starting at right tackle. On the other end, it is transfer portal addition Christian Martin who is going to get the nod.
In the second string, I think it is a battle. Smith is a part of that battle. Knowing the way Illinois players can get injured, having solid depth at the tackle position is crucial. Smith provides that depth, and he could be very important for the 2026 season.
- Prediction: 1 start, primary 2nd string player
