Selecting Devon Witherspoon with the fifth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft is already paying dividends for the Seattle Seahawks.

After missing week one with an injury, the former Illini star has suited up in the past three contests. In week two, Witherspoon helped Seattle get past a tough Detroit Lions squad in overtime with five tackles and a pass deflection.

Last week, Witherspoon had another big game against the Carolina Panthers. He went for 11 tackles and two pass deflections in the 10-point win.

And then Monday Night Football happened. The Seahawks traveled to the East Coast to take on the New York Giants. From the opening kickoff, Witherspoon was making plays. He was all over the field making big tackles and not letting the Giants get in a groove.

With a minute to go and New York driving, that is when Witherspoon would make the play of the game. Daniel Jones got the Giants down to the Seattle five-yard line. A touchdown would have made the game 14-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

Jones starts out of shotgun. The ball is snapped. He takes a two-step drop and lets it fling to the left. Witherspoon steps in front of the pass and takes it 97 yards to the house to increase the Seahawks’ lead 21-3.

Devon Witherspoon is exactly what the Seattle Seahawks need on defense

That pick-six by Witherspoon was just icing on the cake of what ended up being an incredible game. He finished the night with seven tackles, two sacks, one pass deflection, one interception, and one touchdown. He literally scored more touchdowns than the entire Giants team.

Witherspoon has been great for Seattle since joining the program. He continues to improve each week he takes the field as well.

Against the Lions in week two, he was targeted five times and allowed three receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown. The following week, he was targeted 13 times and only allowed five receptions for 31 yards.

While the grades aren’t out yet, on Monday Night Football, Witherspoon shined the brightest. He had his first sack, interception, and touchdown as a professional. He is also a stalwart in what is a dangerous Seattle defense. It looks like the Seahawks nailed it with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
