The top players in the country continue to get invited to camps, and Illinois basketball commit Morez Johnson Jr. is one of those elite players.

Back in November 2021, the Illini had one of the biggest commitments for the program over the past 20 years. Johnson said yes to Brad Underwood and the Illinois coaching staff. He picked the Orange and Blue over, essentially, every team in college basketball.

The notoriety continues to pile up for the talented frontcourt player as well. Johnson went from being ranked No. 52 in the class of 2024 by 247Sports in March to now being the No. 39 player. This rise doesn’t come as a surprise, as Johnson impresses everyone when he steps on the court.

Johnson has also been getting invited to camps over the past few months with the most recent coming just a day ago when the Nike Skills Academy released its rosters.

Among the high school boys who were invited to the camp is Johnson. He is joined by some of the biggest names in high school, such as Cooper Flagg, Karter Knox, Liam McNeeley, and more.

Illinois basketball needs to add some guards to help Morez Johnson Jr. in 2024 and beyond

Johnson attending these camps is great for his development at the high school level. They enable him to improve and get prepared to enter the college ranks.

When Johnson does get to Champaign, he is going to need some help. Illinois did manage to pair Johnson with Jason Jakstys, but we are going to need backcourt talent to go along with these two towers.

There are multiple options when it comes to guard play. Illinois is in the top 10 for top 75 recruit, Jared Harris. Mikey Lewis is another name that is at the top of the list. He is down to six teams and kept Illinois involved. Let’s not forget about Jaiden Glover either. He has Illinois in his top eight.

If the Illini can land a couple of these guards for 2024, then this class has a chance to be one of the best ever to come through Champaign.
