The transfer portal can bring teams some great talent, and it brought the Illinois football team the most accurate quarterback in program history.

Tommy DeVito was a great addition to the Illini in 2022. He didn’t rack up the awards, but he was good enough to make the All-Big Ten honorable mention list. DeVito completed 69.6% of his passes in his lone season in Champaign, which ended up being the highest single-season completion percentage in program history.

During his senior campaign, DeVito would throw for 2,650 yards, 15 touchdowns, and just four interceptions. It was one of the best seasons from an Illinois quarterback over the past 30 years.

Despite a solid final year in college, DeVito would go undrafted. Right after the draft, the New York Giants didn’t waste time. They hopped on the chance to sign DeVito to a contract.

New York Giants depth chart projection – Tommy DeVito

When you go undrafted and sign a contract after the draft, that means you could be cut sometime during the preseason to get the roster down to 52 players. I don’t think DeVito is one of those guys, though.

As of right now, the Giants are projected to have DeVito on the roster as the third-string quarterback. He is behind starter Daniel Jones and second-stringer Tyrod Taylor.

It honestly wouldn’t shock me to see DeVito play well during the preseason and enter the regular season as the second-string quarterback for the Giants. He is young and has talent. Plus, DeVito is from New Jersey and attended Syracuse for four years. He would be a fan favorite instantly.

Taylor also seems to be struggling in training camp right now. The chance is there to show the New York coaching staff that DeVito is a solid backup to Jones. Keep an eye on this quarterback battle for backup with the Giants.
